Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to focus on second grade fluid flow over a rotating disk in the presence of chemical reaction. Uniform magnetic field is also taken into account. Because of the smaller magnetic Reynolds number, induced magnetic field is negligible. Heat equation is constructed by considering heat source/sink.

Design/methodology/approach

Suitable variables are used to transform nonlinear partial differential equations to ordinary ones. Convergent series solutions are attained by applying homotopy analysis method.

Findings

Trends of different parameters on concentration, velocity and temperature are shown graphically. Skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt number are calculated and investigated under the effect of elaborated parameters. An elevation in the value of magnetic field parameter causes collapse in the velocity distributions. Velocity distribution in increasing function of viscoelastic parameter. Temperature and concentration profiles are decreasing functions of viscoelastic parameter. Concentration distribution reduces by increasing the chemical reaction parameter. There is more surface drag force for larger M, while opposite behavior is noted for β.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, such consideration is yet to be published in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the three-dimensional (3D) flow of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) due to bidirectional nonlinearly stretching surface by considering porous medium. Characteristics of both single-walled CNTs and multi-walled CNTs are discussed by considering Xue model. Darcy–Forchheimer model is used for flow saturating porous medium.

Design/methodology/approach

Optimal homotopy analysis method is used for the development of series solutions.

Findings

The authors deal with 3D Darcy–Forchheimer flow of CNTs over a nonlinearly stretching surface. Heat transport mechanism is discussed in the presence of Xue model. The homogeneous and heterogeneous effects are also accounted. The mathematical modeling is computed using boundary-layer approximations.

Originality/value

No such work has been done yet in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss the salient aspects of the Darcy–Forchheimer flow of viscous liquid in carbon nanotubes (CNTs). CNTs are considered as nanofluid, and water is taken as the continuous phase liquid. The flow features are discussed via curved surface. Water is taken as the base liquid. Flow is generated via nonlinear stretching. Energy expression is modeled subject to heat generation/absorption. Furthermore, convective conditions are considered at the boundary. The Xue model is used in the mathematical modeling which describes the features of nanomaterials. Both types of CNTs are considered, i.e. single-walled CNTs and multi-walled CNTs.

Design/methodology/approach

Appropriate transformations are used to convert the flow expressions into dimensionless differential equations. The bvp4c method is used for solution development.

Findings

Velocity enhances via higher estimations of nanoparticles volume fraction while decays for higher Forchheimer number, curvature parameter, behavior index and porosity parameter. Furthermore, thermal field is an increasing function of nanoparticle volume fraction, behavior index, Forchheimer number and porosity parameter.

Originality/value

Here, the authors have discussed two-dimensional CNTs-based nanomaterial Darcy–Forchheimer flow of viscous fluid over a curved surface. The authors believe that all the outcomes and numerical techniques are original and have not been published elsewhere.

Abstract

Purpose

The novel mechanical, chemical and thermodynamics characteristics of both single- and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) make them a subject of much attention for the scientists and engineers from all domains. Fluid flows subject to CNTs are significant in biomedical engineering, energy storage systems, domestic and industrial cooling, automobile industries and solar energy collectors, etc. Keeping such effectiveness of CNTs in mind, this paper aims to examine peristaltic flow subject to CNTs in an asymmetric tapered channel. Both single and multiple walls CNTs are considered. The viscosity of nanomaterial depends on nanoparticles volume fraction and temperature. Total entropy rate through second law of thermodynamics is calculated. Heat source/sink and nonlinear heat flux are accounted.

Design/methodology/approach

The complicated flow expressions are simplified through lubrication approach. The velocity, temperature and entropy expressions are numerically solved by the built-in-shooting method.

Findings

The solutions for entropy generation, temperature and velocity are plotted, and the influences of pertinent variables are examined. The authors noticed that entropy generation is an increasing function of the Brinkman number.

Originality/value

The originality of this work is to communicate peristaltic CNTs-based nanomaterial peristaltic flow of viscous fluid in an asymmetric channel. No such consideration is yet published in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine squeezing flow of hybrid nanofluid inside the two parallel rotating sheets. The upper sheet squeezes downward, whereas the lower sheet stretches. Darcy’s relation describes porous space. Hybrid nanofluid consists of copper (Cu) and titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles and water (H2O). Viscous dissipation and thermal radiation in modeling are entertained. Entropy generation analysis is examined.

Design/methodology/approach

Transformation procedure is implemented for conversion of partial differential systems into an ordinary one. The shooting scheme computes numerical solution.

Findings

Velocity, temperature, Bejan number, entropy generation rate, skin friction and Nusselt number are discussed. Key results are mentioned. Velocity field increases vs higher estimations of squeezing parameter, while it declines via larger porosity variable. Temperature of liquid particles enhances vs larger Eckert number. It is also examined that temperature field dominates for TiO2-H2O, Cu-H2O and Cu-TiO2-H2O. Magnitude of heat transfer rate and skin friction coefficient increase against higher squeezing parameter, radiative parameter, porosity variable and suction parameter.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper is investigation of three-dimensional time-dependent squeezing flow of hybrid nanomaterial between two parallel sheets. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no such consideration has been carried out in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on MHD unsteady flow of Carreau fluid over a variable thickness melting surface in the presence of chemical reaction and non-uniform heat sink/source.

Design/methodology/approach

The flow governing partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary ones with the help of similarity transformations. The set of ODEs are solved by a shooting technique together with the R.K.–Fehlberg method. Further, the graphs are depicted to scrutinize the velocity, concentration and temperature fields of the Carreau fluid flow. The numerical values of friction factor, heat and mass transfer rates are tabulated.

Findings

The results are presented for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid flow cases. The authors conclude that the nature of three typical fields and the physical quantities are alike in both cases. An increase in melting parameter slows down the velocity field and enhances the temperature and concentration fields. But an opposite outcome is noticed with thermal relaxation parameter. Also the elevating values of thermal relaxation parameter/ wall thickness parameter/Prandtl number inflate the mass and heat transfer rates.

Originality/value

This is a new research article in the field of heat and mass transfer in fluid flows. Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model is used. The surface of the flow is assumed to be melting.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider the problem of thermal destratification facing engineers and scientists during the motion of fluids which consist of rigid and randomly oriented particles suspended in a viscous medium under the influence of Lorentz force. This paper provides an insight into the non-linear transfer of thermal radiation within the boundary layer.

Design/methodology/approach

Similarity transformation and parameterization of the non-linear partial differential equation are carried out. The approximate analytical solution of the governing equation which models the free convective flow of strong and weak concentration of micro-elements in a micropolar fluid over a vertical surface is presented.

Findings

It is observed that the velocity and temperature distribution are decreasing properties of thermal stratification parameter St. Maximum local skin friction coefficients are ascertained at an epilimnion level (St=0) when the magnitude of thermal radiation is small. Thermal stratification parameter has no significant effect on the temperature distribution in the flow near a free stream.

Originality/value

The relationship between stratification of temperature and the transfer of thermal energy during the problem of thermal destratification facing engineers and scientist during the motion of fluids which consist of rigid and randomly oriented particles suspended in a viscous medium under the influence of Lorentz force is unravelled in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose the knowledge of thermal transport of magneto hydrodynamic non-Newtonian fluid flow over a melting sheet in the presence of exponential heat source.

Design/methodology/approach

The group of PDE is mutated as dimension free with the assistance of similarity transformations and these are highly nonlinear and coupled. The authors solved the coupled ODE’s with the help of fourth-order Runge–Kutta based shooting technique. The impact of dimensionless sundry parameters on three usual distributions of the flow was analyzed and bestowed graphically. Along with them friction factor, heat and mass transfer rates have been assessed and represented with the aid of table.

Findings

Results exhibited that all the flow fields (velocity, concentration and temperature) are decreasing functions of melting parameter. Also the presence of cross-diffusion highly affects the heat and mass transfer performance.

Originality/value

Present paper deals with the heat and mass transfer characteristics of magnetohydrodynamics flow of non-Newtonian fluids past a melting surface. The effect of exponential heat source is also considered. Moreover this is a new work in the field of heat transfer in non-Newtonian fluid flows.
